Chapter Nine
âThanks for making the cocoa.â Lauren leaned back in the chair and took a cautious sip of the steaming chocolate. âItâs wonderful.â
âIâm glad you like it.â Alex had been waited on all his life and it felt surprisingly good to wait on someone else for a change.
Lauren took another sip. âItâs weird but my stomach feels fine now. Maybe Iâm not getting sick after all.â
Alex stirred the marshmallows into his drink with the tip of his spoon and hid a smile. He could have told her she wasnât sick. Lauren could be rather high-strung and heâd had the feeling all along that her jumpy stomach resulted from her dinner plans going awry. Someone who was sick could never have responded to his kisses the way she had. His body tightened, remembering the taste of her lips, the feel of her soft skin beneath his handâ¦.
âTell me about your evening.â Lauren wrapped her fingers around the mug. âHow was your date?â
Her words were like a splash of cold water. Date? There were thousands of things they could discuss and she wanted to talk about another woman?
âIt was okay,â Alex said with a shrug. The evening was a nonevent as far as he was concerned. Four wasted hours that he could have spent at home.
âJust okay?â Lauren prompted.
Alex hesitated for a moment. When he did speak, he chose his words carefully, not wanting to disparage Carly or the others in any way.
âCarly is a nice woman. Her friends are nice. Thereâs nothing wrong with her or them. But I donât plan on seeing her again. At least not socially.â
Surprise skittered across Laurenâs face. âWhy is that?â
It seemed a ridiculous question for her to ask after what had happened between them less than a half hour before, but she appeared to expect an answer.
âIâll be leaving soon,â he said finally. âIâm not interested in a serious relationship and she made it clear thatâs what sheâs looking for.â
Lauren licked the stickiness off her spoon. âDid you tell her that?â
His brows pulled together. âWe went out one time.â
âYou had fun.â
âYes, butââ
âSheâs probably expecting you to call.â
âI didnât say I would.â Alex narrowed his gaze. âWhy are you trying to push her on me, anyway?â
âIâm not,â Lauren said. âI just know how it feels to be on her end.â
The pain in her voice quelled his anger and reminded him how different Lauren was from other women heâd dated. Theyâd be more likely to claw a competitorâs eyes out than to sympathize with them.
âAnd how is that?â he asked quietly.
âYou go out with a guy. You have a good time. He seems to enjoy your company, too. The evening ends and your expectation is that heâll call and ask you out again.â She paused for a moment and her lips twisted in a humorless smile. âBut he doesnât. You blame yourself. Maybe I shouldnât have said this. Maybe I should have said that. Maybe I talked too much. Maybe I didnât talk enough. It can drive you crazy.
